FAQs
What type of clients do Occupational Therapists usually see? Occupational Therapists can see clients of all ages, from birth through to the elderly across a wide range of medical conditions and disabilities. They can assist individuals with physical disabilities, mental health conditions, traumatic injuries, age related disability and development conditions, just to name a few!
How do I know if I need Occupational Therapy? If you are experiencing difficulty engaging in one or more of your daily occupations and/or needing assistance to adapt to a new or existing illness or disability then it is likely that Occupational Therapy will be of benefit to you. If you are struggling to manage your daily occupations then book in to see an Occupational Therapist to determine how they can best assist you.
What do Occupational Therapists usually do in a session? Occupational Therapy sessions often involve lots of discussions and assessments to determine the exact difficulties, impairments and goals of the client, for example completing upper limb assessments after a stroke. This is then followed by developing and implementing treatment plans which can involve the trial and prescription of equipment, task specific retraining, education and environmental modifications. Occupational Therapists involve a clients family and carers wherever possible.
Will the Occupational Therapist assess my home? Generally yes! Depending on the clients needs, Occupational Therapists prefer to assess how a person manages within the context of their home environment as this is where they spend most of their time. Assessing a home assists them in properly guiding what equipment, modifications or adaptions might be required.
